Some Previous Monthly SPUD Reports:

Thank you to the Vancouver May 2011 VOLUNTEERS!!
Thank you to all the volunteers this month – it started out raining – but turned to sun!! Great day for spuds – and long line-ups. We ran out of spuds after serving about 450 --- I hope more “spudders” will come out in June. Jalen Jana and Chrisoula Jana came all the way in from Chilliwack to help out – thank you! Mike Sapara, Ali Chan, Wanjai Li, Michael Jas, Jacklyn Marshall, Michael Mathews, Sunni Hunt, Sonya, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham all were there too! We also had a special visitor from London UK – Nitin Palan –thanks for coming all this way – perhaps London will be the next city to start a SPUD Patrol.

Thank you to the Vancouver December 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
WOW! What a GREAT turn out!
The weather was sunny but minus 4 with the forecast of 4-5 more very cold nights... the HOT potatoes were really welcome this month! The Socks and DUDS tables were full... A Special thank you to the ladies who knitted over 100 hats - I'm only sorry the lady who dropped them off left without giving me her name!! (please email me) They were a BIG HIT! We gave out hundreds of socks and lots of warm clothing thanks in part to the generosity of Stacey Harris and the wardrobe department at Sony pictures. The lines were long and we ran out of potatoes even though we gave out over 1200 - this was probably our biggest SPUD since last December. Spirits were high and the volunteers loved their service - see the happy pictures! We're still using our "temporary spot" a block West of Main on Hastings - in front of the community garden until the construction is complete at Pigeon Park.

Thank you to the Vancouver November 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
A great SPUD day! Many of our regulars were not available today so we had a lot of new volunteers who came out in the cold and rain (although it stopped for the most part while we handed the spuds out!) The lines was never ending this month and we had to turn many away at the end. Thank you to everyone who brought extra trimmings- at least we didn’t run out this month! We're still using our "temporary spot" a block West of Main on Hastings - in front of the community garden until the construction is complete at Pigeon Park.

We’d like to especially thank Stacy Harris, who brought all the “clothing from the movie wardrobe department”...the clothing was a big hit! Stacey also had a great idea for next month –and that was to have SOCKS n’ SPUDS month --- so everyone! Lets collect warm socks for next month and bring them down to give out – It will be darn cold come December --- Hats and mitts welcome too! Special Thanks to: Sue Chambers, Matt Granlund, Nathan Himelfarb, Rajinder Singh, Duncan & Taylor Bell, Emily Vonveuw, Nancy, Nazima Ali, Stacy Harris, Bev O’Donnell, Ellen Huse, Rajinder Singh, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham. Thank you to the Vancouver October 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
We couldn't have asked for better weather today ---although I must say it was pretty cold last night - and I'm sure anyone on the streets was more than chilled by morning! The lines were long and we ran out of potatoes even though we gave out over 800 - we also ran out of butter --- so if you can please bring some extra next month. Spirits were high and the volunteers loved their service - see the happy pictures! We're still using our "temporary spot" a block West of Main on Hastings - in front of the community garden until the construction is complete at Pigeon Park.

Next month please remember to clean out your closets and bring a few warm goodies for the DUDS table! Sweaters, socks old jackets etc. even running shoes!

Thank you to the Vancouver September 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
This Saturday was a little chilly, damp and drizzling - the lines were long and we ran out of potatoes even though we gave out over 500. Spirits were high and the volunteers loved their service - see the happy pictures! We're still using our "temporary spot" a block West of Main on Hastings - in front of the community garden until the construction is complete at Pigeon Park. Next month if its cold please remember to clean out your closets and bring a few warm goodies for the DUDS table!

Special Thanks to: Sue Chambers, Eileen, Bev, Matt Granlund, Hali MacDonald, Sarah Webster, Stephen Hegyes, Anthony Kuschak, Jude Doyle, Dave Hillman, Luke Hillman, Nathan Himelfarb, Bob Almas, Janet Baxter, Ellen Huse, Sher MacDonald, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 500 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver July 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
Thank you to everyone who turned out for our July SPUD Patrol. We were in a new location along Hastings Street, and the day went very well. We served many grateful people and were able to successfully attract those who are normally used to us being in Pigeon Park. The park is being renovated along with several downtown streets and buildings for the upcoming Olympics in Winter 2010. We are fortunate that the new location is right next to a large and beautiful community garden, so we were able to serve our spuds in front of an unusual city scene: lots of fresh flowers, herbs and vegetables being grown right behind our tables. Somehow, the location just seemed happier and friendlier than usual!

Special Thanks go to: Dave Hillman, Luke Hillman, Jaylene Hamilton, Dawn Mount, Bob Almas, Robert Leon, Jude Doyle, Eileen, Carol Wilson, Anthony Kuschak, Erez Avramov, Ellen Huse, Steve Heges, Sarah Webster, Cory Savitsky, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 450 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver June 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
Thank you to Bob Almas and Cal Esson for being them sponsors this month - Sandi & Jeffrey were out of town. They had great help from Ellen Huse, Robert Leon, Jude Doyle, Penny Ford, Eileen Barrett, Sarah Webster & Patsi, Rajinder Singh, Sue Chambers, Carla Reiger, Matt Grunlund, Stacey Harris, Laura Mack & her son Max , and 2 young girls whose names we didn't get - sorry...let us know who they were.

Thank you to the Vancouver May 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
We had glorious weather for SPUD this month! Many new volunteers showed up, including four new people who had heard about SPUD on Jeffrey's radio interview two months ago. One woman brought her young daughter, who became the expert salt deva - she had no fear as she offered salt to each person with a sweet smile. We were disappointed that one of the largest trees in Pigeon Park was cut down but the good news is that often when we set up underneath it, the pigeons would let us know they were above our heads (enough said!). Many people also provided clothing for the East Side residents, and we thank them for their generosity.

Special Thanks go to: Rajinder Singh, Barb Bell, Patrick and Louise Coady, Bob Almas, Mike Wheelan, Penny Ford, Sarah Webster, Micole Wheelan, Silvana Campbell, Delaram Arabi, Dawn Mount, Taylor Ball, Cindy Ball, Carol Leacy, John Dietrich, Zoltan Toth, Robert Leon, Anthony Kuschak, Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Ann, Judy Charad, Michelle Hall, Laura Mack, Stacy Harris and Sandi Graham.

Thank you to the Vancouver April 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
This month's SPUD Patrol was a bit wet and rainy, but we didn't get too soaked! We had a full table of clothing to give away and many new volunteers. Our newest volunteers were the daughters of several of our regular SPUD participants, along with their friends - several of them were doing a school project on community service and all of their parents came along to show support. We also saw a few folks who hadn't been out to a SPUD for a while, so it was good to see everyone again. It was a successful, cooperative SPUD with many smiling and grateful faces in Pigeon Park.

Special thanks go to: Patrick and Louise Coady, David Hillman, Dawn Hillman, Jacklyn Smith, Samaya Ryane, Eileen Barrett, Reiki Peach-Phillips, Kim Phillips, Wendy Akune, Jasmin Chohan, Stacey Harris, Barb Bell, Judi Charad, Zoltan Toth, Rajinder Singh, Deena Sangha, Robert Leon, Peter MacKenzie, Nicole Whelen, Greg Forrester, Samantha Reynolds, Pete McCormack, Bob Almas, Jan & Don, Chuck & Julie Davis and their two year old boy,
Sandi Graham & Jeffrey Armstrong.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 450 potatoes served!

We had a beautiful day of sunshine and many volunteers for our March SPUD Patrol. A special group of teenagers from Alpha Secondary school in Burnaby belong to a community service club called The Offence, and they were there to lend a helping hand. We also had a group of nursing students from the nursing program at Kwantlen Community College offer their help and support.

Special thanks go to: Bob Almas, Josephine, Joe Stadel, Odette Slater, Connie Ordish, Tim Ordish, Zoltan Toth, Penny Ford, Barbara Bell, Simon Mak, Michael Jew, Inder Jhuti, Brenda Argueta, Aman Bhanjoo, Brittni Carlsen, Krista Ronachuk, Kat Hull, Roz Chin, Harleen, Tracy Borders, Kerry Alder, Katharyn Walder, Alex Sheldan, Julia Frittaion, Patrick Yokura, Marc West, Jeffrey Armstrong, and Sandi Graham.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 500 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver February 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
February's SPUD Patrol was smooth sailing and entertaining this month! We had a whole group of interesting and funny East End residents come and visit our SPUD Patrol tables. So many people had smiles on their faces and were very grateful for the warm food and extras that were handed out. As is the norm, we received more "God Bless You's" in one day than we receive all month! We were blessed with warmer weather and very generous volunteers who supplied us with extra cheese, sour cream and onions - so much that we had some left over for next month. Thank you to everyone who showed up to volunteer - especially those of you who filled our clothing table with all of the warm shirts, shoes, pants and blankets.

Special Thanks go to: Anthony Kuschak, Bob Almas, David Aroeste, Mike Wheelan, Josephine Kovlentz, Dawn Mount, Nathan Himelfarb, Joe Stadel, Greg Forrester, Max Forrester, Gregory Byrnes, Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Sarala Thompson, Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Sue Chambers, Shallah Ray Montaine, Rajinder Singh, Glen Anderson, Krystal Wesnoski, Louise, Taylor Edmands, Brenda Edmands, Stacey Harris and Judi Charad.

Thank you to the Vancouver January 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
Well it coulda' been SNOW but it was RAIN RAIN RAIN.
It was wet and cold yet there was a festive spirit in this weekend's SPUD PATROL as we gave out hundreds of SPUD garnished with butter, sour cream, cheese and onions. (Vancouver is just recovering from weeks of snow - the most in 30 years.) Thank you for all the volunteers that came out today. As the volunteers stood behind the table serving I couldn't help but think that after 1 hour we were cold and soaked - but had warm showers and homes to go to afterwards. Many we were serving had no choice but to huddle under awnings until the shelters opened up that evening.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 500 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver December 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
Our December SPUD was one of the best we had all year. With the threat of snow in the forecast, we were lucky enough to have sunshine and many new faces volunteering with us. We all noticed that the mood at Pigeon Park was quiet and cooperative this month. We were lucky enough to gain three new volunteers who were actually looking for Food Not Bombs, a group that was also supposedly giving away meals downtown that Saturday. When they couldn’t find their group, they joined us for SPUD Patrol. We also had a family show up out of the blue with Tim Horton’s hot chocolate and cookies. They did not know about SPUD Patrol, but just decided to show up at Pigeon Park with their kids to give out some Christmas cheer. They were going to use a bench, but we were finished with our clothes table, so they borrowed it and set up next to us. People were so appreciative to receive a warm meal from us and a warm drink and dessert from this thoughtful family. Many of the SPUD volunteers were also appreciative of the warm beverages since we had a lot of potatoes to give away this month with plenty of supplies of cheese, butter, sour cream and chives – the sun went away in the second half of our day and we were handing out potatoes from noon until 2:30pm. We actually ran out of plates (and we had 600) but one of the volunteers had paper plates in her car so she saved the day for us! Overall it was one of our favorite SPUDs ever! Special Thanks go to: JoAnne Martin, Kate Keogh, Doerte Seidel, Lori Benning, Lori Charko, Joseph Ku, Suzanna Meng, Michael Jew, Taylor Edmonds, Bob Almas, Greg Forester, Simon Mak, Inder Jhuti, Jude Doyle, Nathan Himelfarb, Jerry Rector, Penny Ford, Mike Wheelan, Rajinder Singh, Brenda Edmonds, Karina Carreck, Julie Singer, Josh Beaulieu, Brad Leslie, Liz Perkins, Lauren McIndoe, Ben Amundson, and Stacey Harris.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 700 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver November 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
What a wonderful success for November SPUD Patrol! We had an enormous outpouring of help and donations from the many volunteers who showed up this month. We had a large contingency from Alpha Secondary School, and a large group from the dorms of UBC including several resident advisors. Many people brought extra fixings for the spuds, which always makes our friends at Pigeon Park appreciative – we normally run out of cheese, chives and sour cream, but we had so many donations this month that we were able to have plenty for everyone. We also received a large amount of clothing and shoes, which is always appreciated at this time of year when the weather turns colder. Special thanks go to: Penny Ford, Michael Jew, Tae-woo Kim, Simon Mak, Sandra Chun, Tracy Borders, Dr. K Pendadur, Rajinder Pendakur, Anna Gal, Rara Hakami, Yen Linn Chung, Kirbee Parsons, Sara Casallas, Andres Casallas, Katherine Dormon, Hanna Lew, Katie Dolling, Bob and Mikey Logue, Anthony Kischak, Mellissa Warren, Pete McCormack, Linda, Lori Charko, Robert Leon, Mike Wheelen, Taylor Edmands, Brenda Edmands, Sue Chambers, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham.

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 500 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver October 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
Thank you to those who turned out for the October SPUD Patrol. Many new people contributed their time, money and supplies to support our efforts to assist the residents of Pigeon Park. We had beautiful weather and an abundance of supplies for the event. Many grateful faces thanked us for the warm food, including those who regularly come to Pigeon Park on the Saturday nearest to the Full Moon since they know we’ll be there faithfully. Special thanks go to: Mike Logue, Rena Logue, Bob Logue, Dawn Mounte, Anthony Kuschak, Mike Whelen, Penny Ford, Joseph Stadel, Brenda Edmonds, Taylor Edmonds, Greg Forrester, Sarala Thompson, Michelle Hall, Tommy Transit, Bob Almas, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham. We are looking for many volunteers next month for SPUD Patrol - see you there!

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 450 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver August 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
Our August SPUD was a success, although we were short on a few needed volunteers. Summertime tends to have a smaller volunteer turn out since folks are busy with sunshine activities, whereas towards winter we have more people show up. We had a very long line-up for spuds today and saw many grateful faces. The sun was out for the entirety of our event, which seemed to encourage our friends at Pigeon Park. We ran out of potatoes at about 1pm, but by then the line had grown a bit smaller. It’s always amazing to receive the many “God Bless You’s” from those in line! Please consider coming out next month to help out – we could use your support! Thank you! A Special Thank You goes to our Volunteers: Jude Doyle, Anthony Kuchack, Penny Ford, Bob Almas, and Shallah Ray Montaine. We are looking for many volunteers next month for SPUD Patrol - see you there!

SPUD imageThe SPUD Count - About 250 potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver JUNE 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
We had a glorious day for our SPUD Patrol. We were a bit small this month – we finished in a half hour! Not many volunteers were able to make it this month, but we still fed a lot of very grateful people. One man commented that he had been watching for the Full Moon, and was waiting for us to show up on Saturday because he knew we would be there. It’s hard to estimate the value something like that has for a person who’s only meal that day might just be that one potato! The impact that our volunteers have on the lives of our friends at Pigeon Park is immeasurable. The smiles we receive in return, and the “God Bless You’s” are wonderful. In fact, we receive more by serving potatoes than those who stand in line. What a blessing! Special Thanks go to: Anthony Kuschak, Jude Doyle, Bob Almas, Marina Szijarto, Jeffrey Armstrong and Sandi Graham.

Thank you to the Vancouver MAY 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
Our SPUD Patrol in May was a sunny day with a small group of excellent volunteers. We had a line that kept us busy for an hour, and many people were happy to get back in line for a second or even third potato. We had a large pile of donated clothing that someone donated, and many grateful people went away with things that they found for themselves. Thank you to everyone who showed up to volunteer or donate food and clothing. Your support means a lot to those whom we serve at Pigeon Park. Special Thanks go to: Anthony Kuschak, Pete McCormack, Mike Wheelan, Joseph Stadel, Marina Szijarto, Joseph Forest, Sandi Graham, Jeffrey Armstrong, Shallah Ray Montaine, Jude Doyle, Penny Donovan, Feven Haile

Thank you to the Vancouver APRIL 2008 VOLUNTEERS:
Our SPUD Patrol this month was very calm. We had a small group of volunteers who kept the line running smoothly, and there were many friendly faces who showed up. The weather cooperated with us with a partly cloudy day, and it wasn't too cold. A number of people thanked us profusely with "God Bless You's" and showed their appreciation with warm smiles and shining eyes. It's amazing how a small bit of grace in the form of a potato can open up a connection between strangers! Special Thanks go to: Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Rajinder Singh, Jude Doyle, Shallah Ray Montaine, Joe Stadel, Josh Stadel, Mike Whelan, Penny Ford.

Thank you to the Vancouver JANUARY 2008 VOLUNTEERS!!
Thank you to all of our volunteers this month. We had a lot of clothes and potatoes to give away, and had a number of new volunteers who showed up to help us out at Pigeon Park. Somehow the weather cooperated with us as well – it had been snowing in Vancouver just prior to SPUD, but during the entire hour we were out serving warm spuds to our friends in the park, it didn’t snow at all! We are thankful to the weather devas. Special Thanks go to: Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Bob Almas, Jude Doyle, Paul Sangha, Tessa Lloyd, Penny Ford, Patricia Sky, Raginder Singh, Dave Hamilton, Luke Hamilton, Sandi Graham and Jeffrey Armstrong.

Thank you to the Vancouver DECEMBER 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
We had a really “fun” SPUD this December. All of our cheery volunteers showed up with reindeer antlers on in honor of the season, and our friends in Pigeon Park were very glad to receive all of the warm SPUDs, hot apple cider, chocolates, homemade chocolate chip cookies, fruit cake and other goodies. We had no fights in line, and smiles all around so it was one of the most pleasant SPUD Patrols we’ve ever had! We also had a very dear man in line whom you just wanted to take home with you – so happy and grateful that we were there. He had big rosy cheeks and a big smile, and was a tender little guy. Broke our hearts. Thank you to everyone who showed up and brought clothing, smiles, extra food, and of course, all of those wonderful SPUDS! Special Thanks go to: Michelle Hall, Jude Doyle, Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Penny Ford, Bob Almas, Anthony Kuschak, Rhiannon, Zoltan Toth and Mike Wheldon.

Thank you to the Vancouver NOVEMBER 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
November’s SPUD Patrol was a huge success, thanks in large part to our regular volunteers – who were supported this month by ten new UBC volunteers. We were joined by a fresh crowd of faces from the UBC dorm advisors group, and they all were very glad to receive their posts at the tables. They did a great job! They brought 100 pounds of potatoes along with all of the fixings, and we appreciated their enthusiasm and smiles. We had a DUDS table set up by one of the volunteers, with many warm articles of clothing that were gratefully accepted. Special Thanks go to: Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Bob Almas, Luke Hamilton, Dave Hamilton, Jude Doyle, Penny Ford, Sue Chambers, and our 10 New Volunteers from UBC!

Thank you to the Vancouver OCTOBER 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
We’d like to say a special thank you to the community for all of the clothing that was donated this month for our SPUDS & DUDS table – many people went home with warm sweaters, coats, shirts and socks. Now that the weather is turning colder, the needs on the streets increase, so your donations are a welcomed addition to our SPUD event. Our SPUD this month went very well. We had weather that cooperated with us, and lots of hungry folks. The lineup went fairly smoothly, and we made a lot of new friends. Pigeon Park knows us each month, and very often we seem the same grateful people each month. For sure, our potatoes are a favorite! Thank you to all of our Volunteers! Special Thanks go to: Jerry Rector, Dave Hillman, Luke Hillman, Bob Almas, Kerri Serwetnek, Julia Frittaion, Penny Ford, Samantha Reynolds, Michelle Hall, Jude Doyle, Sarala Thompson, Pete McCormack, Jeffrey Armstrong & Sandi Graham.

Thank you to the Vancouver SEPTEMBER 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
Our September SPUD was a bit rough – we lucked out with no rain despite a cloudy day, but we could really see the toll that drugs take on the population at Pigeon Park. A number of people were shooting up right next to our table, or were in line with their needles and pipes. To say the least, many of them were quite hungry and grateful for a warm meal. We heard many “God Bless You’s” today, along with another comment of gratitude from a person who happened to walk by our tables – he told us, “You are doing a great job!” We had two large bags of clothing to give away, which found good homes. And just when we started to run out of potatoes, another volunteer showed up with more supplies – to save the day! Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer or who supplied sour cream and cheese even though they couldn’t personally be there! Special Thanks to: Bob Almas, Penny Ford, Joe Stadel, Nicole LeFleche, Sue Chambers, Jude Doyle, Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Luke Hamilton and Dave Hamilton. Thank you to Pete McCormack and Samantha Reynolds for providing extra supplies!

Thank you to the Vancouver AUGUST 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
Our August SPUD Patrol was a great success – we were spared any rain, and had a number of volunteers donate much-needed clothing for our friends at Pigeon Park including shoes and several warm coats. Several out of town guests joined us to volunteer and truly appreciated the opportunity to serve SPUDS to the hungry souls in line. Thank you to everyone who showed up and volunteered! Jude Doyle, Amy Armstrong, Bob Almas, Ellen Dooley, Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Karin Elbel, Katie Alexander, Pete McCormack, Sam Reynolds, Tessa Lloyd, Penny Ford, Shallah Raye Montaine, Jerry Rector, Laura Macdonald, Michael Keeling, Sarah Macdonald, Ann Gillespie, Yemaya Duby, Rickie Avitan and Patrick Martell.

Thank you to the Vancouver JULY 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
Our July SPUD was quite small, but successful nonetheless. We only had about 60 pounds of potatoes to give away this month, but many of the volunteers brought extra sour cream, chives, cheese and butter. The good news was that we did not run out of supplies! We welcomed several new volunteers this month, and had several bags of clothing to give away, which were received with thanks from many of our grateful friends at Pigeon Park. Special Thanks go to: Jude Doyle, Umberto Assandri, Pete McCormack, Samantha Reynolds, Irene Assandri, Sue Chambers, Mary Etey, Jacque Lalonde, Dudo Solic, Jeffrey Armstrong & Sandi Graham.

Thank you to the Vancouver JUNE 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
What a gorgeous day for SPUD Patrol! It was a fast day, with potatoes running out after about 500, or so, being served. We had an out of town guest from San Diego joining us this time, Jen Cohen. Thanks for being there to all of our new volunteers! Our weather was perfect, and we were kept hopping by the many hungry folks in line. We also had a large bag of clothes donated for our DUDS table. Thank you also to the people who made donations to buy supplies for this month. We appreciate your support! Special Thanks go to: Bob Almas, Shallah Ray Montaine, Jen Cohen, Jim Ironside, Jude Dole, Katie Alexandra, Penny Ford, Jon Scott, Ashton Butler, Alee Scott, Mary Etey, Sandi Graham, and Jeffrey Armstrong.

Thank you to the Vancouver MAY 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
We had a great May SPUD with many cheery volunteers, weather that was cooperative, and grateful folks on the street who really appreciated the delicious meal. We were quite crowded with lots of people in line, and a lot of help behind the scenes. We do so appreciate all of the new volunteers who came out to this SPUD. Your help and new enthusiasm go a long way in making SPUD a success every month. Special thanks go to: Bob Almas, David Hillman, Joe Stadel, Luke Hillman, Mike Whelen, Rajinder Pendakur, Shallah Ray Montaine, Shaughnessy Sturdy, Sue Chambers, Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Karen Elbel, Brenda Edmonds, Meg Horan, Alan Donenfeld, Marina Gingrich, Laura Fluter, Maxx Fluter, Samantha Reynolds, Pete McCormack.

SPUD image The SPUD Count These months - many potatoes served!

Thank you to the Vancouver JANUARY 2007 VOLUNTEERS:
Well, it was a cold one, folks! We had a very large turnout this month, with an extra box of potatoes left over after an hour and a half – 26 volunteers, and countless numbers of devas in line. Thank you to every one who brought extra supplies and turned out for this SPUD – as the cold months hang in there, it becomes even harder to survive on the streets, so thanks for coming out and supporting us! We fed a lot of very grateful, cold devas out at Pigeon Park. The minute we thought we were running out of supplies, another volunteer would show up with more! We had one woman in line ask us which church we were affiliated with. When we said that we weren’t with any church, we were just people who cared – she thanked us and said that many times they have to sit through a church service and listen to a sermon in order to get a warm meal to eat. She was very grateful that she didn’t have to do anything except stand in line to receive some food. It was very touching to listen to her story. We also had a lot of warm clothes donated for our Deva friends at Pigeon Park. Many people brought warm sweaters, blankets and pillows. We even had a SPUD volunteer reach into her backpack and give a cold Deva her extra pair of socks! He was extremely grateful. In addition, we had a SPUD volunteer become so inspired that she decided to start another SPUD Patrol on the New Moon, so Vancouver is going to have two SPUD Patrols now - one nearest to the Full Moon and one nearest to the New Moon. What an inspiration! Special Thanks go to: Jeffrey Armstrong, Sandi Graham, Sue Chambers, Sarala Thompson, Amanda Lewis, Carol & Art Bomke, Heather & Ron Loftus, Fred Wu, Lynn & Bob Macdonald, Sam Macdonald, Kati Alexandra, Shaughnessy Sturdy, Joe Stadel, Luke Hillman, David Hillman, Shallah Ray Montaine, Bob Almas, Richard & Francesca Plaster, Rajinder Pendakur, Samantha Reynolds, Pete McCormack, and especially Phyllis Hansen at Shared Vision for the FREE Ad! We had several new people come due to the ad – thanks Phyllis!

Thanks for having us Alpha and UBC students this past Saturday. I'm currently working on a personal blog and am wondering if you can provide me with some of the photos from the event...I was handling the salt and pepper. Thanks! I look forward to the next SPUD Patrol meet-up!

Hi Guys,
Thanks - we both enjoyed our 1st outing at your Spud-Patrol. It's funny we both were less sure about being accepted by the people (living on the street) rather than our acceptance of them? As it turned out of course they were so thankful & polite for our food & smiles - which made us feel we were the ones receiving...
Thanks again for the experience - we will be back,
~ Don & Jan McGregor, April 11, 2009

Hi Jeffrey,
I was at yesterday's Spud Patrol event and wanted to thank you for the rewarding experience. It was definitely an eye-opener and your line on your website "CAUTION: Be prepared for a rush of gratitude that will sustain and refresh you in a way that sleep doesn't do... " is so accurate. Thanks.~ Fred Woo

I HAVE TO SAY, I have seen more humanity and conflict mediation happening amongst people who are apparently devoid of hope, than I have seen in most other communities. Through my participation in SPUD Patrol, I have changed my attitude from one of fear and disdain, to one of joyful inclusion and faith in the redemptive potential of people. These unrecognized devas often ask us what church we're from and we say "No church, just people". The originator of the question thinks for a moment, looks us straight in the eye and says "Wow, that's really nice, thank you". We receive more "God Bless You's" than you will likely hear in your entire life in any "spiritual community". It's not just about food. It's about meeting people in their environment, without institutionalizing the whole thing. We don't tell them what they can or can not do. And, the food is prepared with love and infused with prana. ~ LO

I just wanted to let you know that after visiting the Spud Patrol and seeing the people down there and all the volunteers, it set something in motion for me. Today I was at Canada Customs and saw cans being donated for the needy and realized that our can openers could really be appreciated by people who can’t even afford basic kitchen implements. So I asked my father today if we could donate can openers to some food banks and he agreed to a donation of 200 can openers. We’re giving them out to Delta Assist and to The Greater Vancouver Food Bank tomorrow. Thanks for your help this Christmas. Happy Holidays!! ~ Cindy Ann Chong Cindy@TheCanPros.com

People ask me why I go to SPUD all the time... (the truth is, I organize all our travel and life plans around the SPUD Saturday). I'm usually exhausted from the Friday night TGIF event - having prepared meals all day and then cleaning up until 3 am. When I wake up in the morning, I know I've slept in a comfy bed and have a warm shower to refresh me and I remember that many don't have that luxury. I also know that 50 people won't get fed today if I don't get up and bake my potatoes! It's a small sacrifice on my part but I wouldn't miss the smile on their faces for the world!
~ Sandi Graham
